Does Companion connect to, or need the internet to function?

No! Companion runs fully offline, and does not require any connection to the internet. It does perform a check for available updates when launched; though automatic updates are elective, not required. No data imported into Companion are ever sent to any servers, through any APIs, or stored anywhere other than your local machine. Companion can be used in fully secure, air-gapped environments, subject to internal IT department review, of course.

is this an 'ai' thing?

Hard no. Companion doesn't use any AI technology whatsoever, runs with no external dependencies, and operates fully locally on the user's machine. Imported data (snapshots) aren't interpreted by any AI or LLM, and aren't stored in any servers, anywhere. No AI, nor us, receives any of what's imported into Companion.

I’m an adapter. How does this help me? What is this for?

Companion was partially made to simplify manual parts of the adaptation workflow, such as technical QC (reviewing efforts cues, checking punctuation, typos), and to help make the workload of adaptation more manageable.

Where Companion shines is in supporting a scene-based workflow, where scripts are split up into scenes, with each scene being assigned a Pass. By grouping scenes into Passes, you're able to group scenes together non-chronologically, based on their dialogue density, complexity, and nuance, allowing you to balance the workload of an adaptation evenly across multiple structured stages.

Your approach is up to you; address the least dialogue-dense scenes first to get them out of the way, or address the most dense, nuanced, and complex scenes first to make sure they're rock-solid. This approach helps you provide a uniform amount of attention across the full length of the script.

Companion steps in to help ensure you’re balancing the workload of each pass evenly— easily find the total duration for each pass, total amount of words, the most dialogue-dense character, and more, to help hedge against burnout, and help you maximize the time you spend adapting more efficiently.

Is this free? Will you start charging for this?

Yes, it’s free. Actually free, forever. There aren’t many tools aimed at giving adapters a leg-up, this is our offering to the betterment of the craft and community.

Why use VoiceQ Snapshots specifically, why not Excel files?

VoiceQ Snapshots retain more minute, and critical details, such as individual word timings, character information, significant amounts of data for each language in a project, and proxy media information. If we relied on Excel scripts, the experience would largely be the same; but in re-importing your script into VoiceQ, you would lose a significant amount of work that isn’t saved in the Excel file.

CAN I RE-IMPORT EDITED SNAPSHOTS BACK INTO VOICEQ AFTER EDITING THEM IN COMPANION?

Yes! Companion is able to natively work with the exact native structure of .json VoiceQ snapshots, so any edits you make will fully carry over into VoiceQ upon re-importing.

How does the qc functionality work in a studio context?

Companion's QC functionality, or QC Tab, was designed to be equally usable for an individual adapter, or by studios receiving adaptations from freelance adapters. Companion automatically reviews and flags errors in the adaptation and compiles them into a table-styled list, with the option to export the list of QC errors into an Excel file for easy communication with the adapter. Companion also allows you to easily resolve typos and punctuation errors natively in the QC tab to avoid having to wait on a revision for simple fixes.

What’s the deal with the ‘MIDI Flipper’?

MIDI Flipper was designed for a specific use case of allowing actors to hear and ‘respond’ to other characters in the OV dialogue stem, without the engineer having to manually ride the fader to duck out their character’s dialogue. MIDI Flipper creates individual MIDI files for each character near-instantaneously, with each MIDI file containing a MIDI note for each line of dialogue, at the exact start and end timecodes.

These MIDI files can then be used as a sidechain trigger to automatically ‘duck’ OV DX stems per-character, or even to visualize character overlaps for incidental and secondary characters.
